Technology Integration In MATH
Smartboard Integration
This is one example of how a Smartboard slide can be used to exemplify "visual questions" where students can solve the question by kinesthetically moving objects to their appropriate area. The smartboard also allows you to "hide" parts of the screen so that once you have solved for one step, you can uncover the further prompt to make the kids take their knowledge deeper towards the application of what the question is really asking for.
Online Games
Dreambox learning has an AWESOME game called "Multiplication: Open Arrays" for teaching how to break up a large multiplication product grid into smaller partial products to solve for the answer (N5). The students were very excited to see that they could multiply such big numbers! Even students who had been struggling with the strategy beforehand were able to make the concept click once they played the game (PLUS you don't have to wait for kids to painfully draw out grids!)
Zombie Paintball is a very engaging game that the kids LOVED to play. You observe the number line at the bottom and determine what the number relationship is from number to number. Then you have to hit the appropriate zombie with a paintball gun to fill in the missing pattern number. Occasionally, a ghost appears and asks you what the number rule is instead. (Patterns and Relations 5, P1)
Rags to Riches is a game that involves mental multiplication of numbers that are multiples of 10 (N4). This game is set up in a "who wants to be a millionaire" style game, and it is great for reviewing the skill after learning it, or for formally assessing how the students are doing with this concept. Caution: some of the questions get quite difficult.

Video Support
One way that teachers can utilize technology in the classroom is through the use of video demonstrations. One benefit of posting videos is that teachers can take advantage of a "flipped-classroom" where the students watch a video to learn a strategy before class, and then come to class ready to apply their new knowledge through activities and worksheets - which frees up the teacher to have more one-on-one time rather than instructional time. Other benefits of creating videos or "playlists" is that it allows students who have missed class to catch up, it allows for students who are struggling to re-visit and review the content, and it allows a chance for parents to observe these new strategies that they may not understand. Below is a collection of some strategy-based videos that can be used to help teachers demonstrate content.
